Cockroaches can measure over 50 mm (2 in) length, with tropical species tending to be larger than those found in other climates. Cockroaches have six legs, two antennae and some even have wings. However, most winged cockroaches are not particularly adept at flying. With flat, oval-shaped bodies, these pests are often oily to the touch and may be cool or warm, depending on the temperature of their environment. Cockroaches in the house are better at hiding than you are at finding them, and their eggs are naturally protected from many over-the-counter insecticides and are elusive when it comes to cockroach traps. Adult ants species come in a variety of shapes and sizes but each will be one of three different colony castes; queens, workers or males. Queens are fertile females that lay all the eggs in a colony. Bed bugs have small, flat, oval-shaped bodies. They are wingless. Adults do have the vestiges of wings called wing pads, but they do not fully develop into functional wings. Adults are brown in color, although their bodies redden after feeding. Full-grown bed bugs move relatively slowly and measure between 4 to 5 mm. Homeowners sometimes have the misconception that bed bugs are too small to see with the naked eye.

Fleas are small, wingless and about 2.5 mm long. Their bodies are shiny and reddish brown in color, covered with microscopic hair and are compressed to allow for easy movement through animal fur. Fleas do not have wings, although they are capable of jumping long distances.

Millipedes live in dark, cool and moist environments. You are most likely to find them under mulch, dead leaves, grass clippings, or flower beds. They will only invade a home when the weather is excessively wet or dry. They can enter a home through basement doors, windows or crawlspace vents. Garage doors and even front doors are common entry points if not properly equipped with weather stripping.
